The Expanding Universe
The Quran describes the continuous expansion of the universe, confirmed by Hubble in 1929.
وَالسَّمَاءَ بَنَيْنَاهَا بِأَيْدٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَ
Was-samā'a banaynāhā bi'aydin wa innā lamūsi'ūn
“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander.”
610-632 CE
The verse describing this phenomenon was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)

Edwin Hubble confirmed: Expansion of the Universe
The Quran states that Allah is continually expanding the heavens. The Arabic word "lamūsi'ūn" is an active participle, indicating an ongoing action of expansion - not a one-time event. This precisely matches the modern scientific understanding that the universe has been expanding since the Big Bang and continues to expand at an accelerating rate.
The expansion of the universe was only theorized in 1922 by Alexander Friedmann from Einstein's equations, proposed by Georges Lemaître in 1927, and observationally confirmed by Edwin Hubble in 1929. For over 1,300 years, this verse stood without scientific context - now it aligns remarkably with one of the most important discoveries in cosmology.

In 1929, Edwin Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other, proving the universe is expanding. Using the 100-inch Hooker Telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory, he observed that the light from distant galaxies was shifted toward the red end of the spectrum (redshift), indicating they were receding from us. The farther away a galaxy, the faster it appears to be moving away. This discovery fundamentally changed our understanding of the cosmos and provided key evidence for the Big Bang theory.
